What Sounds Can You Personalize On Your Computer?
I've marked the 3 top sounds that everyone wants to personalize from the list of all sounds on one of my computers. This is a pretty much basic computer. Your computer will probably have a few more sounds you can personalize.

For sure you will want to personalize the startup and shutdown sounds. And the email notification. But you can do so much more.

And you can't really do anything wrong. If there is a speaker Icon next to an event, then it already has a sound, just change it. If there's not a speaker Icon, then NONE is chosen from the pull down list of sounds. Just choose a sound.

All you need to do is either select a sound from the fairly good size list that's already in your computer, or add some of your own effects or music and then just choose it below. I show you how starting right now.

This is the simplest thing you can do with your computer. OK , let's personalize it now.


Where Do I select the Sounds?
It couldn't be easier. Just navigate to the sound control and then it's up to you which sounds to use. Here' all you do.

Arrow 1. Click the Start Button.

Arrow 2. Click Control Panel.


The Control Panel
We're on our way. Just Click this Icon. It's called Sounds and Audio Devices.


Sound Schemes - Change Sounds, Change Moods or Seasons.
OK, wasn't that easy. After you click on the Sounds Tab, you're ready to start personalizing the sounds.

Arrow 1. Microsoft calls this a 'Sound Scheme.' A sound scheme is just a master name for the sounds you've chosen. Why? You'd think that if you assign a sound to an event like when you get an email, that would always be the sound. But Microsoft was smart. You can have different sounds for the same event. Just choose a name for your scheme.

Then whatever sounds you choose to go with the events will only play when you have that scheme chosen. You can have several schemes so that the same event (like when you get mail) can have different sounds. Maybe at Christmas you have holiday music. For Cinco De Mayo, you have Mariachi etc.

So the point is just click the Save As and Choose a new name. All the sounds will play just like you want. Then you can name another scheme and have all or some of the sounds different for the same events. Then you can always go back to Default or any of your other choices. It's neat because all you do is change the name in the scheme box to change all the sounds in your computer to fit your mood.

So the main concept with schemes is that you can make all the changes you want, but they will only be made for the scheme chosen so you can instantly go back any time.

Arrow 2. This is where you actually assign specific sounds to specific events. It's super easy to do and I'll show you how below.

Arrow 3. Click this to create a new Scheme.


A Sound Scheme By Drew
Here I'm just showing you the pull down menu. Right now I can choose Default, No Sounds at all, or DrewFolk, which plays all folk music sounds for my events. It just takes a second to change and you're sure to want several schemes to fit your mood or the season. It's so easy to do.


Change Sounds Now
OK here's where we see how to change the sounds. It's so easy it almost doesn't take a tutorial.

Arrow 1. Click on the event that you want to change.

Arrow 2. You can open this pull down window and all the sounds that are available will show here. Just choose the one you want.

Arrow 3. You can also Browse to choose the sounds. . .But, if you are looking in the sounds folder (called Media Folder) that's fine. If you choose a sound from another part of your computer, that's fine, but if you ever remove it, you won't hear a sound for that event.

Nothing bad will happen, you just won't have the sound. So I recommend that you copy any sounds you want to use into the media folder and I show you how to do that later.

Arrow 4. Play. You can hear any selected sound by just clicking this play button.


An Event Without Sound
If an event has no speaker (Arrow 1) you can see (Arrow 2) that [None] is chosen. To choose a sound, just open this pull down window and choose any sound. Then the speaker shows up automatically.


The Sounds You Have
Here you can see the sounds in my Media Folder. There's nothing you have to do.

Arrow 1. Shows the Windows Notify Choice that comes with your computer.

Arrow 2. Shows Big Spender (from Sweet Charity) that I've chosen a few bars from to tell me when I have a new email arrive.


The Browse For New Sounds
If you don't want to use the Pull down menu, you can open the Browse Dialog Box. It works just the same. Just double Click any sound in the folder and:

Arrow 1. The sound that you double click will show up in the File Name Box.

Arrow 2. You can play any highlighted song to be sure it's what you want.

Arrow 3. Click OK to Load the Sound.

NOTE: Use this Browse Dialog box to go to find files in other folders on your computer. You can use a .Wav file as long as it's in your computer. But as I said earlier, it's best to put them into the Media Folder so when you move or remove them from another folder, you don't lose the sound you've chosen.

OK, that's all there is to choosing sounds for Windows System Events. Now you really can take control of your computer.

You can use ANY .WAV STEREO OR MONAURAL sound file. Most will be 5 seconds or less. But startup and shutdown can be longer.

Putting Tracks into the Media Folder
OK so Drew wants you to put the .Wav sound effects and extracted music files into the Media folder. But, where is it and how do I get there?

Arrow 1. Click the My Computer Icon on your Desktop or in your Start Menu.

Arrow 2. Click on your C: Drive.


Onward To The Media Folder
Now that you've clicked C:, just look for the Windows folder Arrow 1. Click this folder.

Note: sometimes you'll get a blue info screen saying, "Do you really want to go here?" Say Yes.


Ah, Here's The Media Folder.
Just Click Arrow 1, the Media Folder. It's in alpha order in the Windows directory, so it should be easy to locate.


We're In The Media Folder
Wasn't this easy? Now you're in the Media Folder. This is where all your system sounds are found. Just copy any effect or music here like I have with Arrow 1. And you're done.

Arrow 2. Note: you may find other folders here in the Media Folder. Many programs like your virus scan, AOL and others put the sounds that are unique to them here too. You can click this folder or any folder to see what's inside.


Wow, Effects I didn't Know I had.
Wow, check this out.

Arrow 1. Shows that I'm in the Microsoft Office 2000 Directory. These are effects that came with my CD of Office 2000. You probably have something like it too.

Arrow 2. The Whoosh is really pretty darn good. Why don't you see what you have now?

OK, How Do I Extract A Theme From My Music?
First I'll show you music. Then we'll do the sound effects. Above is the track from the musical Sweet Charity of, "Hey, Big Spender." I'm going to show you how to just grab the "Hey Big Spender" theme.


But First, Here's How To Select Anything.
Selecting is a basic Windows Function. It's the first step to using many of the Editors powerful functions. So, spend a few minutes getting comfortable making and using selections.

You'll use selections to apply any of the filters, operations and editing powers, You'll use it to select a part of delete or to copy. And, you'll select a part of a file or track that you want to save as we are here and then by going to File/Save Select as you will save just that one part without changing the original file at all.

How do you select?

Put your Mouse cursor in between the upper and lower tracks along the silver center line. Hold down the left button and drag till you have the part selected that you want to work on, delete or alter. It will turn red like you see above.

Then, just choose any function and Left Click it from any of the menus and the editor will perform the operation you want.

And remember, if you don't like what you've done? No problem. Just click the UNDO arrow and it will be undone so you can try again. This makes it really easy, fast and lets you experiment all you want because for most operations, you're just one click from undoing anything you've tried. So, don't be afraid to experiment. It's the best way to learn.

First Select The Theme
Everything you do with the editor starts with selecting something.

Arrows 1. Drag your mouse from the left to the right (holding down the left button) around the silver center between the top Left and bottom Right channels. This is how you select.

Arrow 2. How do you know where the Big Spender them is? No problem Just click the play button and listen to the music. When the part you want comes, stop or pause the music and select a section that's BIGGER than what you want.

That way you've got some extra music both before and after selected. Then if you click arrow 2, play again, you'll hear just what you've selected.

Arrow 3. Now you can zoom in and get the fine detail to make a perfect selection. Click the Zoom Button.


Where Did The Rest Of The Song Go?
Don't worry it's all here. When you zoom in what you are doing is choosing only one part of the track to look at. The rest of the track is there and accessible to you, it's just off screen so it's blown up so you can see the detail and work on just the part you want to see.

In fact if you look at the HMS numbers below the red selection you'll see that the entire window is about 15 seconds long. That's probably zoomed in far enough to do what we want to do.

You can always zoom back out by clicking on the -Zoom above, or click the blank magnifying glass to take you all the way back to seeing the entire file in the screen at once.

Oh, and you can zoom in some more by clicking once to unselect the red area, then select a small area again and click the zoom button. You can make the whole screen about 1/4 of a second if you ever wanted to go that far.

Anyway for now, just click once in the red so it won't be selected any more.

Arrow 1. shows you a small green bar. This is a handle that you can grab to drag the entire viewing screen to the left and the right. Then you can work on any part of the entire track.

Arrow 2. is just to remind me to tell you to click in the selected area so we can get to work on extracting the theme.


The Final Theme Selection
OK, now we are just going to select the actual few words, "Hey Big Spender" and save it.

Arrows 1. Now that we are zoomed in, just highlight the small area that has just the words you want. This time it's easy to see the individual word spaces so it's not a problem to find just what you want. If it's not, I told you how to zoom in some more above.

Arrow 2. Click Play, to be sure you have just what you wanted and that you are happy with your choice.

Arrow 3. Go to the File Menu and choose Save Select As. This will leave the original file alone and just save a new file of only the part you've selected. This is a very powerful tool and you'll use it all the time.


The Save As Process Again
I want you to see how easy this is, but it's really just the same as what we did above. Get comfortable with saving and finding the various folders in your computer. They are your friends, but we hear from so many DAKonians that they can't find what they've saved. So let's do this one more time.

Arrow 1. Choose C:

Let's Open The Windows Folder Again
See it's the same. After you selected and clicked on C: above, just click on Arrow 1, the Windows folder and tell it yes you want to see what's inside if it asks you.


Here's the Media Folder
Yup, you see, it's always the same. Just click Media

OK that's it. Just click Save and you're all finished. That's how easy it all is. Now you've got your favorite sound effects or extracted music ready to be your system sounds from now on. And remember, you can change it to something new just this quickly too.

College Fight Songs YEA - Go Bruins
Next to the thousands of requests for Sound Effects which is why I produced this whole tutorial, College Fight Songs are the Number 2 request. I went to UCLA about 100 years ago. And I loved it. You can get your college fight song and extract just the main theme from it and use it to start your computer every day. It's great.

But where can you get it? Well I downloaded the UCLA fight song in a few seconds from www.fightmusic.com and you can too. We aren't affiliated with them or any other site, just DAK, but if you don't find them when you read this, just go to Google and search for College Fight Songs and you will probably find a free download like I did or be able to buy a CD. OK, here's what to do.

Arrow 1. Here's the name of the UCLA Fight Song

Arrow 2. Here I've left out the drumbeats and cheering and just gotten the theme

Arrow 3. Here I'm playing what I selected to be sure it's what I want.

Arrow 4. Here I'm saving the Select As just like we explored before.

Are you seeing that once you've done one thing, from then on it's all easy and repetitive? I told you this was easy, and it is.


Save UCLA Fight Song In Media
Yup, it's all easy and all the same. Just navigate to the Media Folder.

Arrow 1. Name the track

Arrow 2. Be sure you use .Wav, not MP3

Arrow 3. Click save and you're done.

OK, Now The Sound Effects Fun Begins.
Here's a Church Bell
This is where it gets good. You've gotten 62 really great all digital all really dramatic sound effects. What you see above is a church bell ringing 4 times.

But, you're not locked out, so let's just take what we want.

Arrows 1/2. Here I'm selecting just one big ring. And when you click the play button after making this selection, you'll see that we start with the bell and the rest of what's selected is the long residual sound of the bell. It's really great. You can use this as one of your system sounds, or just paste it into a movie you are making or add it to a CD or other presentation.

Arrow 3. is just to remind you to go to File/Save Select As and name your extracted sound effect. I started with a really easy effect, but they are all like this and you can choose effects by specific sounds like 1 bell ring like I did, or the number of seconds you want. Or any other criteria that makes sense to you.


One Cat Meow Or More
Most sound effects are really easy. It's super easy to pick out just the part you want.

Arrow 1. I've selected just one cat meow.

Arrow 2. I'm playing what I selected just to be sure it's perfect.

Arrow 3. I'm doing a Save Select as so I'll have a file with just one cat meow in it.

Mixing Sound Effects Or Anything - Easy
 Let's Get A Cat & A Dog Together To See What Happens.
OK, we've done extractions, now let's mix two sound effects together. It's easy too. I've already loaded in a Dog barking.

Arrow 1. Shows you were your cursor is right now. That's important because when you mix sounds or paste in a second sound you control exactly where you want it to start by putting your cursor in the exact spot you want to paste.

Arrow 2. This time I want to start at the beginning, but there's no reason I have to do it that way. It's up to me. And from now on, where you mix or paste anything will be up to you.


Mix In The 2nd, 3rd or 10th Sound.
OK, Here Comes The Cat
So, all we are going to do is electronically mix two sound effects. Since it's digital, there's no hum or noise and we could mix 10 sounds in if we wanted to.

Arrow 1. Put your cursor where you want the mix to begin.

Arrow 2. Go to Edit/Mix From File


Get The New Track
Now you can use any track on your computer. You can even mix MP3 and Wav. But right now, let's just add the cat.

Arrow 1. Here's the Cat. Just click it and it will show up in the File Name Box.

Arrow 2. Click Open.

That's all there is to mixing a file.


The Final Mix Is Done
Boy It's Noisy Here
That's it. You have the cat meowing and the dog barking and it's easy. It's fast and you've mixed tracks like a pro.

Copy And Paste Any Part To Any Other Or The Same Effect
OK, There's a lot here, but there's really nothing to it. I've just tried to put this all in one picture. Don't worry, this is super simple.

What we want to do is extract/copy a part from an effect. In this case ONE HEARTBEAT and put it in another place or in the middle of other effects. Here's all you have to do.

Arrow 1. You'll always see the name of your file here. This time it's heartbeat.wav

Arrow 2. Select the part you want. In this case I chose one heartbeat.

Arrow 3. It's always a good idea to Play your selection before copying it and using it.

Arrow 4. You can either use the Copy Icon as shown or open the Menu and choose Copy.

Arrow 5. OK, just click your Cursor where you are going to want to paste your copy of what you've selected. The dotted yellow line shows where the cursor is at any time. It doesn't matter if it's in the same effect as you copied or in another effect or musical track. When you copy anything it's on your Windows Clipboard and it will stay there till you put something else on it.

Arrow 6. This is what's in your computer memory, normally you can't see it unless you use the View Clipboard tool in Windows. But all you need to do is click EITHER the Paste Icon as shown or go to Edit and choose Paste. Then your selection will be pasted exactly where you want it. It's clean it's fast and it's a perfect digital copy.

You can use the same copied selection to copy and paste 100 times if you want. Once it's there, each time you click Paste, it will put a new, clean digital copy exactly where your cursor was positioned.

Now you know how to copy and paste any selection from any effect or any musical track into the same or any other effect or musical track. It's very powerful but very, very simple to do.

Simple Append Or Add To The End Of An Effect
OK, so you've got one effect loaded and you want to put another effect at the end. Here's all you do.

Arrow 1. I have the tiger roar loaded.

Arrow 2. I put my cursor at the end. Remember that's the dotted yellow line.

Arrow 3. I open the Edit Menu and choose Paste from File.
What File Do You Want To Append Or Put At The End?
Just choose any effect or music. Nothing could be easier.

Arrow 1. Click on the name of the effect and it will show up in the File Name box.

Arrow 2. Choose Open.
That's It, The Tiger Roars And The Glass Breaks.
Was this easy or what? Just look at what we've done. Because you are finished and there's nothing to do in this screen but admire your creation.

Arrow 1. This is where the cursor was, so that's where the new effect starts.

Arrow 2. Here is the Tiger Roar.

Arrow 3. Here is the Glass Shattering.

That's all there is to appending one effect onto another.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I used appending at the end for this example, but you could just as easily have put one effect into another by putting your cursor somewhere in the middle of the first effect. This will not mix the two. That's Mix from file. But it will insert the new effect into any place in the original that you want.

Email Sound Effects To Your Friends And Family. It's Easy.
OK if you use Outlook Express or Outlook, here's how easy it is to send any of your creations to your friends and family. Plus this is exactly the same way to send them pictures or other attachments. It's so easy, I just wanted to make sure you knew how and were comfortable doing it too.

Arrow. Do you see the paperclip? That's the symbol to show that you want to attach something to your email. Just click it.

Oh and for AOL and other email programs, this is pretty close to what you can do too, so why don't you join us and read along too.


Here's how to Actually Attach A Sound File
OK when you click the Paperclip above, this is the dialog box you get. It's very simple and straightforward to use.

Arrow 1. Navigate to the folder where the file you want to attach is located. What you see here is the C: drive. Often yours will be on your Desktop or in your Media Folder or in you My Music folder.

NOTE: Don't worry, you're not moving, hurting or deleting the file you send. You're just sending a copy of it so relax and send it.

Arrow 2. Just click on the file you want to send.

Arrow 3. The file will show up here in the File Name Box after you click it.

Arrow 4. Click the Attach Button.


Just Click Send & It's Gone
OK, so this is what the sound file looks like (Arrow) when it's loaded and ready to go. All you need to do now is click Send and it's on its way. That's all there is to sending a sound file any attachment in your emails. It's super easy.

IMPORTANT CAUTION: Depending on who you buy your Internet Service from and who your recipient gets their service from there will be limits to how big your attached files can be. For the most part 2-5 megabytes is the max you can send so of course sending .Wav files isn't really possible because 5 megabytes is less than 30 seconds. So, send MP3 files and you'll be all set.


Don't See The Paperclip?
No problem. If there's no clip, just Click on the insert menu Arrow 1 and choose File Attachment, Arrow 2. You'll get the same dialog box and your attachment will be on its way.

But I Want The Clip.
Here's How To Personalize Outlook Express.
Again, no problem.

Arrow 1. Go to the View Menu,

Arrow 2. Choose Toolbars

Arrow 3. Choose Customize.

OK, if there's no paperclip you'd find it in the left side. You can do this for any tool that you want to be on your active tool bar that you'll see at the top of the program.

Arrow 1. Click on any item in the Left Side 'Available Tool Bar Buttons.'

Arrow 2. Click The Add Button to send it to the Right where it will actually display on your tool bar, or if it's already there and you never use it, click on the item in the Right side and then click the Remove button. You're not deleting or adding anything to your computer. All you are doing is making it show or not.

Arrow 3. After it's on the bar, you can change its position. It says up and down, but it's really left and right. Just highlight any tool that's on the bar (means it's already in the Right Box). Then, use the up down buttons to put each tool just in the order you want it to be.

Now you know how to customize your menus and tools in Outlook and Outlook Express.
